  63. Here is an update on Steve's post on the 733's External DTMF Control.

  65. Note that this message concerns the control of the 733 via an HT, and not 
  66. the microphone of the 733.)

  68. I found everything to work as Steve described except three things. 
  69.  
  70. (1) I could not return to "stanby mode" by pressing "A#".
  71. (2) To return the radio to normal operation, I only had to do the
  72.     "disable sequence" once, not twice.
  73. (3) I also found that the remote DTMF control functions did not match
  74.     those found on page 81 of the manual.  When in "External DTMF
  75.     control", the chart changes a little.  The new chart is below.

  95. There are no "shifted" functions.  Just one function per button.
  96. After you hit "B" for TONE SELECT, press * or # to go up or down,
  97. and same is true when in VFO mode or in MEMORY mode.
  98. Tones 7, 8, and 9 mimic the three buttons at the top of the 733 mic.
  99.  
  100. I found hitting "C" changes the display to look like it is in cross-band
  101. repeat mode (dots between 100KHz, 10KHz, and 1KHz digits), but the 
  102. radio does not actually cross band repeat.  I've tried several things
  103. to make it cross band repeat, but could not get it to work.
  104.  
  105.  
  106. I've personally concluded that "External DTMF Control" is pretty useless.
  107. I think if it could be used in conjunction with the cross band repeat
  108. mode, the radio would then be a frequency agile remote base (like the 732).
  109.

  111. Here is Steve's report (with my additions/corrections) if you missed it:
  112.  
  113. - Pick a UHF control frequency.
  114. - Turn on the UHF DTSS function and select a tone sequence. (p. 89)
  115. - Turn the UHF DTSS function back off.
  116. - Press Band Select to move to the VHF band.
  117. - Turn OFF the radio, press and hold [CONT SEL] while turning the radio
  118.   back on, then release [CONT SEL].  The S-meter scale and the DT 
  119.   indicators for the UHF band will begin flashing.  The LOCK indicator 
  120.   will turn ON, and most front-panel keys (except PWR) will be disabled.
  121. - To begin remote control, you should key the external radio and
  122.   press the following key sequency: "Axxx#" where "xxx" is the preset
  123.   DTSS code selected earlier.
  124. - If the proper code is received by the 733, the beeper will sound and
  125.   the "DT" indicator will stop flashing.  The radio can now be
  126.   remote-controlled, using the function chart above.
  127. - ???? To return to standby mode, press "A#" on the remote radio. ?????
  128. - To return the radio to normal operation, turn the radio off, then
  129.   press and hold [CONT SEL] while turning the radio back on.

  132. Note:  While you're in "External DTMF Control", key the 733's mic and
  133. listen to the transmitted audio while pressing  some DTMF tones... 
  134. and Steve thought they sounded bad while in "DTMF Feedback Mode"!!!

  165. No no no!!! Radios like the Kenwood TH-78A and others can copy their memories
  166. over the air into other radios of the same brand. It's useful when you have
  167. a group of people at an event and want to set up a number of channels for
  168. everyone to use. Too bad there's no standard data format for cloning, though.
  169. It's a good idea but doesn't work unless everyone has the same radio.
